Authoritative or authoritarian - a management training course

How could you be authoritative without being authoritarian?  The authoritarian, when resisted, says, “Do what I say, or else!”  The authoritative manager says, “It worries  me that you’re reluctant to do this – because of what’s at risk for the business if you don’t.  So I need  you to do it.”  What makes you more authoritative is saying honestly how you feel.
