Appraisal training
A lot of people find giving a motivating appraisal difficult. Praising somebody is easy when things are going well, but if you want to be critical and motivating at the same time it is hard.
Many people are sensitive enough to realise that if they are too critical during an appraisal they can run the risk of demoralising, de-motivating or upsetting the other person. Fear of the conversation being uncomfortable, unproductive and demotivating can lead managers to beat about the bush and pull their punches so their point evaporates, or they might simply avoid it all together, which means the appaisal becomes a tick-box exercise.
The problem with an honest appraisal is giving feedback which is strong enough to be taken seriously, yet friendly enough to win co-operation. Our appraisal training will show you how to be "tough on the issue yet soft on the person", how to be firm but fair, while remaining motivational. (See also Praising without Patronising, Praising and Criticising and Recieving criticism).
We are frequently asked to provide short training sessions for people who want to become more effective communicators at work. One of the most popular is "How to criticise people or their ideas without making them feel attacked". During this session participants are presented with tips and techniques to use during an appraisal using emotional intelligence as a way of giving honest feedback that doesn't run the risk of antagonising or patronising people. Participants are coached on how to write their own winning conversational scripts that they can take and use right away.
